Grootbos is situated in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom – the smallest, but richest of the six floral kingdoms in the world. It includes 9000 different species of which 745 are found in Grootbos. Known as ‘Fynbos’ because of the fine leafed structure, includes heath, restios, ericas and proteas. It is also a premier marine & flora destination, as the only lodge in South Africa with the marine big five (whales, white sharks, penguins, seals and dolphins).
This owner-managed private nature reserve overlooking Walker Bay is situated about 50km east of Hermanus and is less than a 2 hr drive from Cape Town (by tar road). It is home to two sanctuaries: Garden Lodge and Forest Lodge. Each free standing suite is set in tranquil surroundings and comprises a lounge with a fireplace, bedroom(s), en suite bathroom and wooden deck with a spectacular ocean view. All rooms are equipped with extra length beds, 100% down duvets with cotton bedding, heated blankets, safe, tea & coffee station and a well stocked mini-bar.

It compromises 16 stylishly furnished one-bedroom luxury suites. The bathrooms also feature outdoor showers, under floor heating and all suites have DSTV, telephone and internet connection. THE CULINARY EXPERIENCE
Duane Lewis, Executive Chef at Grootbos Nature Reserve, has managed to create an impressive selection of dishes using distinct flavors and ingredients. Through his extensive travelling he has been able to create authentic, flavorful dishes that can be enjoyed at Red Indigo and The Garden, which are both located in Grootbos Private Nature Reserve’s Garden & Forest Lodge.
Duane’s culinary inspiration is simple; use fresh, locally grown produce to create satisfying, flavorful cuisine. His kitchen uses fresh fish directly from the harbour in Gansbaai or Hermanus, beef from the Overberg region, free range eggs gathered from Grootbos’ resident chickens and produce freshly grown on site.
Through the contemporary design of Red Indigo and The Garden you will be left with the feeling of being in the presence of great style without coming across as exaggerated or uncomfortable. Massive windows offer you breathtaking views of Walker Bay and the surrounding fynbos reserve and the decor lend themselves to an unrushed dining experience in the hands of a truly superb service team.
The combination of hospitality and culinary delights is almost overwhelming to the senses: each dish with a personality of colors, divine flavor and delicate aroma, complemented from their own cellar will treat you to a true fusion of African flavor and European cuisine.
